Joe (the SME) is not mentioned in either the Acceptance Criteria or Definition of Done. This is because, in general, Joe (as a SME) is neither responsible nor accountable to the Team, and the Team can’t make agreements on Joe’s behalf. The Team is agreeing to do the work with or without Joe’s help, even though they know that Joe is the expert to seek advice from.

Stories are promises for conversations, so make sure the Team Members have the conversations, and that appropriate SMEs are involved.
