Definition of Lead Time

The duration of time an item of work that elapses for an item of work throughout its progress within a Kanban System.

Examples

System Lead Time: The duration of an item of work through a process from the time the item is committed to be delivered, until either is taken delivery of, or enters the last unbounded queue (infinite WIP state) awaiting acceptance on the part of the customer.

Customer Lead Time: The duration of time that transpires from the time a request is submitted by a customer until that customer or the intended recipient of that request, takes delivery of it.

The elapsed time between placing an order and receiving the product was longer than I expected. As a customer, ordering a birthday present from Amazon, the lead time was much longer than I expected.
